The 1st Scientific Conference of the Computer Science Engineer opened its doors on May 22nd, in the Hall of Events in School Building 4 at UCI; it will last until next May 29, when the event will end.

This space, organized by the University Students Federation (FEU)in coordination with the Office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and the Research and Postgraduate Directions, aims at strengthening the scientific education of students through the presentation of their research results; it will also enhance these research works with solutions in accordance with the lines of investigation of the university.

Present at the opening of the meeting, there were Dr. Sc., Natalia Martínez Sánchez, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs; MSc. Silvano Merced Len, Vice-Rector for University Extension and Residence; Dr.C. Omar Correa Madrigal, Director of Investigations, and Eliani Cabrera García, FEU President in this house of higher studies.

Cabrera García welcomed the participants and recalled the words of our Commander in Chief Fidel Castro when he pointed up the commitment of UCI as a software producer and its contribution to the computerization of the Cuban society.

In addition, the panel "Nova, the Cuban distribution of GNU / Linux", by MSc. Yoandy Pérez Villazón, director of the Center for Free Solutions (Cesol), opened the scientific sessions.

In his presentation, the Director of Cesol gave an account of “Nova” from its start in 2004 until present day; he mentioned the marketing variants of this product, the strategic alliances of the center with the Industrial Company for Informatics, Communications and Electronics (Gedeme), the Group of Electronics, Security and Haier, as well as the advantages provided by technological sovereignty for any country in the world.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, engineer Manuel Alejandro Sánchez del Campo, specialist of this Center, introduced a video of Nova 6.0, which will be released in October this year. It showed a new user interface with a pleasant and friendly design, and he said that among the novelties added to this version is that it allows programming each user’s daily activities from the calendar provided by the operating system with a system of notices for each one

In addition, a tree was planted in the woods area close to School Building 2 and in the evening the event “Photographic Memory” was held in the School Building 4.
