On the morning of October 19, on the eve of the Cuban Culture Day and close to the commemoration of the departure of the historic march towards Mangos de Baraguá on October 22, and the 124th anniversary of the death of the Mother of the Maceo brothers and also mother of all Cubans, on November 27, School building 6 at the University of Informatics Sciences (UCI) was named after Mariana Grajales.

Likewise, the room honoring Antonio Maceo was set up, according to the resolution issued by Dr.Sc. Miriam Nicado García, UCI Rector.

MSc Silvano Merced Len, Vice Chancellor of University Extension and Residence; MSc. Reina Victoria Estrada Nelson, Dean of the Introductory Faculty of Computer Sciences (Fici); MSc. Nely Morera Quintanal, Staff Management Director, and other members of the University Council were present in the meeting, accompanied by the faculty and students of this school.

During the meeting, the Rector’s document containing the appointment of Dr.C. Roberto López Dosagües, as President of this Room and the objectives for which it was created, was released and made known.

The keynote speech was delivered by MSc. Briseis Godines Valdés, Head of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at FICI, who recalled the figure of Mariana as an example to be followed by all Cubans when she made her children swear to struggle until Cuba was independent or to die trying.

In the gathering, the poem Caminante by Antonio Guerrero was heard in the voice of Dalia Atencio Macías, as well as an excerpt from Dr. Eusebio Leal words during the political act and military interment ceremony of the remains of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Mariana Grajales, celebrated in the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia, in Santiago de Cuba.

Later, all the attendee were invited to take part in the inauguration of the Room honoring Antonio Maceo. It is located on the first floor of this school building, and from now on, it is a place to remember, to investigate and to explore into the history of the Maceo-Grajales family and all their imprint on our freedom struggles aimed at achieving Cuba's independence.

Yordanis Crespo Urrutia, Vice-President of the Room, presented here the first version of the virtual Walk to Antonio Maceo’s birthplace, which recreates important aspects of the life and work of the Bronze Titan and his family. It was created with the collaboration of other teachers who, during their vacations, visited the place to take pictures and record the videos that are part of this project.

As a colophon, the participants signed the guestbook of the site, which invites the entire university community to know and feel the patriotism of these great Cubans.
